The authors present preliminary results from a detailed study of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 85. A wavelet analysis of the ROSAT X-ray image clearly shows a regular main body with a second fainter component to the south. The authors have obtained an optical catalogue of 1040 galaxies by scanning a Schmidt plate. Its wavelet transform confirms the roughly regular aspect of the central part of the cluster, with a density enhancement coinciding with the southern X-ray emission. The luminosity function for the central region of the cluster, constructed from 59 galaxies brighter than V = 19.25, can be fitted by a Schechter function of index α = -1.5±0.2 or by a combination of either a Gauss or an Erlang function with a Schechter function.
