The authors study the evolution of the galaxy velocity distribution in galaxy clusters under binary aggregations. They find an asymptotic distribution characterized by a galaxy velocity dispersion smaller than that of the dark matter. This is due to the transfer from orbital to internal energy occurring in galaxy merging, not completely balanced by the galaxy response to the cluster gravitational field. As a consequence, the value of the parameter β, which enters in the standard hydrostatic isothermal β-model, tends to be β < 1 when determined from fits to the X-ray surface brightness data. This result is robust with respect to different shapes of the cluster mass distribution.
