The derivation of the Initial Mass Function (IMF) is reviewed in general
terms, followed by a more detailed discussion of the procedure used to
estimate the IMF of a star cluster (NGC 2214) in the Large Magellanic
Cloud. This is intended as an introductory article to the study of the
IMF using star clusters.
