Impact Phenomena: Earth
Scientific paper
The hypothesis that the dinosaurs were extinguished by an asteroid or comet impact is not a new one. Although the possibility of cometary impacts has been mentioned since the time of Edmond Halley, the frequency of massive impacts on our planet was radically re-assessed after the first Earth-crossing asteroids were discovered in the 1930s. In 1942 Harvey Nininger suggested that geological boundary events, when mass faunal extinctions occurred, might be the result of asteroid impacts. The first specific suggestion that the dinosaurs were killed in the aftermath of an asteroid impact seems to be that made in a privately-published book written by Allan O. Kelly and Frank Dachille in 1953. Kelly and Dachille showed remarkable foresight, suggesting the same sort of planetary defence system as is being planned today.
