The question of polarisation in prompt GRB flux still remains a contentious issue in GRB science and the measurement of such is steeped in systematic difficulties. GRB polarisation measurements to date have not been verified. However, the benefits of being able to measure the prompt GRB flux polarisation are still large.
We present the test case for the BATSE Albedo Polarimetry System (BAPS): an analysis of the atmospheric albedo flux from GRB 930131. BAPS exploits the method of Compton polarimetry and requires dual Monte Carlo GEANT simulations of both the Earth's atmosphere and the CGRO spacecraft, and is initially geared to the analysis of short and particularily strong bursts. This initial result shows a high-degree of linear polarisation in the prompt gamma ray flux. BAPS and the systematic uncertainties related to this result are discussed.
