The Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT), a joint venture of the Instituto National de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is a 50 meter antenna for astronomical observations between 80 and 350 GHz. LMT will be the largest single dish antenna of its kind and will have unprecedent sensitivity and mapping capabilities in the millimeter range. Its location in the volcan Sierra Negra (4600 meters; latitude 19N) will provide access to the Galactic center and a sizeable fraction of the Southern hemisphere.
The LMT will be a powerfull instrument for mapping star formation regions in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, allowing local determinations of CO/H2 factors in conjunction with GLAST data. Blazar monitoring and simultaneous multiwavelength observations, together with gamma-ray burst observations and follow-up are another two areas where LMT can make a clear contribution to the understanding of high energy gamma-ray sources.
