The nucleosynthesis of the isotope 60Fe is believed to occur in supernovae. After it is expelled into the interstellar medium its half-life is long enough (1.5 Myr) for many such events to contribute to a steady-state abundance, which gives rise to Galaxy-wide diffuse emission of γ -ray lines at 1173 keV and 1332 keV. Detection of this emission was recently reported by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager experiment. Here we report preliminary results of measurements of these lines by INTEGRAL/SPI.
