In the light of recent criticism, the evidence for evolution in the number density dN/dz of Ly-alpha forest absorption lines over the redshift range 1.5-3.78 is reexamined. On the basis of a two-parameter fit to dN/dz for a homogeneous sample of QSOs, both the existence of strong global evolution in line density with redshift and the presence of a countervailing trend within individual QSOs (the 'inverse effect') are confirmed. A former conclusion that the inverse effect is only significant when absorption lines close to Ly-alpha emission are included in the sample is also confirmed. If the inverse effect is due principally to increased ionization of Ly-alpha clouds in the vicinity of each QSO, it may be possible (with large samples of QSOs covering a wider range in redshift and luminosity) to use this effect to determine directly the intensity of the UV background as a function of epoch.
