An analysis of the orbit of Her X-1 is carried out, including x-ray and optical data. HZ Her is required to be inside or filling its critical Roche lobe. This results in no allowed orbital solution unless HZ Her is not corotating with the binary system. The precise form of the constraints on the binary parameters is given. That HZ Her is non-corotating seems surprising but may be important for the origin of the 35-day x-ray cycle of Her X-1.
