The authors used the Space Telescope Science Institute coronograph on the ESO 2.2 m telescope in conjunction with narrow-band interference filters to image the immediate surroundings of the symbiotic variable R Aquarii in the light of the bright nebular emission lines of Hα and [N II] 6584 Å. It is shown that in the inner 15arcsec and beyond the arcsecond diameter core, several line-emitting features stand out from the sky background presently. Three features were previously observed in approximately the same positions including the faint southern loop with knot and jet features at 2arcsec.5 and 6arcsec.5 in the NE quadrant. The authors report the appearance, however, of a bright new feature at 8arcsec.4 from the nucleus, very prominent in both emission lines, probably associated with the extended feature at the end of the jet. The authors estimate from results in the published literature that it appeared sometime between 1984 January 20 and 1986 November 28, the date of the present observation.
