Relativistic internal shocks in GRBs are known to be the production sites of strong, sub-equipartition magnetic fields. This has first been predicted theoretically by Medvedev & Loeb (1999) and proved by the state-of-the-art numerical PIC simulations performed by several groups. Very recent advances in the understanding of the highly nontrivial long-term evolution of the created magnetic fields and the particle dynamics downstream the shocks, as well as in the theory of radiation production from highly chaotic, very small-scale fields, -- the regime where the standard synchrotron theory fails, -- are remarkable. We will review them in the talk. These results allow us to address the question of spectral evolution of the prompt GRB emission from the first principles, without any ad hock assumptions. In particular, we investigate whether the hard-to-soft evolution observed in prompt GRB emission is associated with the field evolution or with the particle dynamics/acceleration.
