High-quality images of M87 show that in the region 3-8 arcsec, the 'core region of integrated luminosity profiles, the apparent major axis of the galaxy is perpendicular to the direction of the jet. It is proposed that the galaxy has an oblate spheroidal core whose plane is perpendicular to the plasma jet. The measurements are close to the limit of what is currently feasible with ground-based observation - it is not possible to resolve core structure in more distant radio galaxies. This may explain the failure of previous studies to detect strong correlations between radio and optical position axes.
