The motion of plasma in postflare loops is examined, using data for postflare loops on December 20, 1982, and May 16, 1981. It is found that gravity, magentic field gradient, and initial velocity must all be considered simultaneously in order to study the plasma motion. It is shown that there are two types of motion: accelerating motion with gravity dominating over the magnetic field gradient and decelerating motion with the magnetic field dominating over gravity. Initial velocities as high as several hundred km/s were observed at the top of the May 1981 loops. Formulas are presented for calculating both types of motion using initial velocities and magnetic properties.
