Proposed as the Black Hole Finder Probe for the Beyond Einstein program, EXIST will be a significantly more sensitive gamma-ray burst detector compared to previous missions, particularly for bursts with low average photon energy Ep (e.g., X-ray rich bursts and X-ray Flashes); EXIST should be ˜5 times more sensitive than Swift. EXIST's low energy sensitivity should be ideal for detecting high redshift bursts whose gamma rays will be redshifted into the X-ray band. Therefore, EXIST's threshold photon flux as a function of Ep can be compared to models of the burst population as a function of redshift. Based on EXIST's sensitivity and large field-of-view, we predict the detection of ˜2 bursts per day.
