Several different attempts have been made yet to investigate magnetic fields and dynamo action in accretion disks. In certain cases the shape of a thick accretion disk seems to be represented fairly well by a torus. Thus, for calculations on such structures, it is advantageous to use the proper toroidal coordinates. Here, as an aspect of dynamo theory, the magnetic decay modes of a torus are determined. For this purpose the diffusion equation inside the torus (with constant magnetic diffusivity) and the potential equation outside (vacuum) are solved. A modified separation leads to analytical solutions but it needs an approximation which restricts their validity to only slender tori. The decay modes are useful to treat the induction equation of dynamo theory for an accretion torus. The field structures of some typical modes are shown.
