The authors report high-resolution 12CO(1-0) mapping of the central parts of two late-type spiral galaxies, NGC 6946 and Maffei 2, made with the IRAM 30 m telescope (beamsize = 23arcsec). These maps reveal the presence in both galaxies of a central component unseen with smaller telescopes; this component is marginally resolved and has a size <600 pc; its H2 mass is around 2×108M_sun;. In NGC 6946, the authors find a molecular bar quite similar to that found with the interferometer, but definitely wider: its extent, measured at half-maximum, is 910×370 pc; its total extent is around 1250×560 pc. In Maffei 2, the velocity field in the center shows a misalignment with the optical major axis, suggesting the presence of a bar in this galaxy, too. The authors demonstrate the presence of oval distortions of the gravitational potential in the center of both galaxies. These oval distortions of the potential could trigger the star forming activity in the nuclei of NGC 6946 and Maffei 2.
