Two methods of 'phase averaging' are considered, and applied to the processing of both conventional and closure phases. One involves the assignment of the phases or closure phases to unit vectors before averaging, the other preserves a link with the original visibility vectors from which the phases are derived. It is shown that the second method is as much as a factor of two better than the first, under very noisy conditions.
