Polarimetric observations of 54 stars in the direction of a southern H I filament are presented. The observed polarization is in general very low. A weak correlation between the angle of polarization and the structure of the filament was found. By means of the variation of the polarization with the distance, it is inferred that the cloud is located at about 350 pc. Comparing the observed polarization with the color excess, the low degree of polarization in this region is interpreted as due to a projection effect of the galactic magnetic field.
