The H 40 alpha and H 50 beta radio recombination lines have been observed in Orion A. The intensities of these lines combined with other line data for n between 50 and 110 are compared with various theoretical calculations concerning the population of highly excited states of hydrogen. It follows from the comparison that radiative excitation is unimportant in populating the levels between n = 40 and 110 in Orion A. The calculations of the level populations of Salem and Brocklehurst (1979) are in the best agreement with the experimental data. Allowing for the population and other factors affecting the line intensities, the electron temperature of the central part of Orion A is derived to be 8000 + or - 100 K.
