The jet of 3 C273 is characterized on the basis of (1) photometric and astrometric analyses of high-resolution UBV electronographic plates obtained at the Cassegrain focus of the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope during 1983-1986 and (2) photoelectric UBV photometry obtained with the 1-m telescopes at the Observatoire du Pic du Midi and ESO in 1985 and 1987. The data and analytical results are presented in extensive tables, graphs, and contour maps and discussed in detail. The main-jet optical knots (including some newly discovered knots) are shown to be evenly spaced (with 2.4-arcsec separation), to have U-B and B-V color indices consistent with nonthermal processes, and to be well correlated with the observed radio structure (including the outer radio 'hot spot'). These findings are compared with results on the M 87 jet and found to support a theoretical model based on synchrotron emission with equipartition.
