The structures of galaxies hold clues towards understanding their formation. Deep imaging and redshift surveys are necessary to locate galaxies, however this basic information is insufficient for understanding the methods in which galaxies form. The light distribution in a galaxy reveals its past and present formation history, including past and ongoing major mergers and star formation. By applying robust measurements to the structures of galaxies at high redshift in deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging programs such as the Hubble Deep Field, GOODS and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, we can trace the major methods by which galaxies form.
