Sea ice is a potential hotspot for horizontal gene transfer due to
physical concentration of bacteria, viruses, and extracellular DNA. An
ice-affiliated bacterium, "Colwellia psychrerythraea," has acquired
genes for compatible solute degradation via horizontal gene transfer.
