We investigate the relationship between black hole mass, M BH, and host galaxy velocity dispersion for QSOs in Data Release 1 (DR1) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) (www.sdss.org) using an automated spectrum fitting routine. We derive M BH, from the broad Hβ line width and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion (σ *) from the [O III] narrow line width (σ [O III]). The results agree in the mean with the M BH---σ *, relationship for nearby galaxies. Use of Mg II and [O II] in place of Hβ and [O III] allows an assessment of the evolution of the M BH---σ * relationship at redshifts up to z ˜ 1.2.
