A new method has been developed for estimating magnetic fields from Zeeman effect data, based on maximum entropy reconstruction. Statistical trials on simulated data show it to produce more accurate estimates of the field strength than previous techniques when the signal-to-noise ratio in the data is low. Where there is a high signal-to-noise ratio, the method gives information about the angle the field makes with the line of sight. Other effects, such as gain differences between the two observed polarizations, can be included.
