Solar FTIR measurements at the Permanent Ground Truthing Station Zugspitze (47 °N, 11 °E), Germany, are used to validate the SCIAMACHY operational NRT level-2 data products. The available SCIAMACHY data of the reprocessed Validation Reference Set of total column O3 (DOAS_0) and NO2 (DOAS_1) are addressed, which was made available by ESA in early 2004. Zugspitze FTIR column measurements are compared to SCIAMACHY columns of pixels within a given radius around the Zugspitze ground site. Ozone columns agree well in absolute values and are able to follow the annual cycle in a realistic way comparable to the Zugspitze FTIR measurements. For operational SCIAMACHY NO2 retrievals, there seems to be a significant overall underestimation of the real columns on average. Furthermore, the operational NO2 product is not able to reflect the NO2 decrease due to the annual cycle during the second half of the year (2002). From analysis of the zenith angle dependence of the operational SCIAMACHY columns and further comparison to the Scientific SCIAMACHY NO2 data product (DOAS UB1.0) of the University of Bremen it is conjectured that there may be both a level-1 problem in the SCIAMACHY data, as well as a level-2 problem in the operational NO2 retrievals, that both contribute to the failure of the operational NO2 product in monitoring the annual cycle
