The Birr 6-ft reflecting telescope, completed in 1844, and in use up to c.1900, was supported on a mounting consisting of intersecting altitude-altitude axes below the heavy primary mirror. Counterpoises held against the massive flanking walls East and West permitted the telescope to be raised by a hand-operated windlass. The chain tensions required have been evaluated and an optimum configuration, taking into account chain-sag, has been suggested. Using counterpoises of 2 tonnes each a single lifting chain with a tension between 200 kg and 500 kg could be used.
