A description of the observable quantities related to the magnetic field in Ap stars is given. Such quantities are calculated as predicted by different magnetic configurations: the pure dipolar case, and the superposition of a dipole plus a linear quadrupole non--aligned with the dipole. It is discussed which are the observational techniques allowing one to discriminate the dipolar field from a more complex magnetic configuration.
