The mechanism by which late-type stars lose their spin angular momenta with time has become a subject of much debate. Extensive background material is presented on the evolution of empirical relations between chromospheric activity - stellar rotation - age, and how more recent investigations have shown that the current understanding is far from complete. A new survey is described which will greatly increase the number of late-type stars known to be members of nearby, open clusters. This programme will allow a rigorous determination of a possible rotation - age relationship among GKM dwarfs. Examples of some preliminary results are also presented.
