The cosmological redshift, related to the scale of the universe at the time of emission, can be used as an indicator of both the distance and velocity of the source at any specified time. Parameter-free formulae can be derived for the distances and velocities at the time of the emission and the present epoch for the flat big bang model and the steady state model. The formulae for the two models are very different, implying, for example, that sources that recede faster than the speed of light CAN be observed in the former, and NOT in the latter. A ``world map'' according to the big bang model is included for interest.
