A key issue in the study of star-forming galaxies is their evolution at X-ray wavelengths. This proposal aims provide the first direct observational constraint on the X-ray evolution of these systems by obtaining deep XMM data of an unparalleled ultra-deep and homogeneous radio survey reaching micro-Jy sensitivities. Compared to previous efforts, the advantage of deep radio surveys (like our own) is that they have been shown to be extremely efficient in compiling starburst samples to z~1 with uniform selection criteria and small contamination by AGNs (less than 15%). Our radio selected sample, combined with deep X-ray observations offer a unique opportunity to directly measure, for the first time, the X-ray evolution of star-forming galaxies.
