We propose to 3 XMM/Epic observations of Eta Car during its eclipse egress to monitor the variation in column density as the X-rays brighten as a probe of the wind from Eta Car and to confirm or deny excess absorption seen in RXTE and one SAX observation. We will use the NH variations to model the wind and to determine if there is a mass-loss enhancement possibly caused by tidal interactions between Eta Car and a companion near periastron. If so this may be suggestive of the mechanism which powered the "Great Eruption" of 1843.
