We propose X-ray observations of three X-ray bright ``fossil groups'' centered on the dominant galaxies NGC4936, IC1633 and NGC6269. With XMM-Newton, we can derive accurate gas density, temperature, abundance, pressure, and entropy distributions to test mass distribution predictions from numerical simulations, investigate the interaction of radio lobes with the cooling gas in the central galaxies, determine the past star formation history, inventory the stellar component through abundance determinations, test formation theories of fossil groups to determine their relationship to more typical groups and clusters, and finally, test models of thermal conduction which may explain the absence of cool gas in ``cooling flows''.
