Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we have identified a large number of candidate type 2 quasars, i.e., possibly obscured AGN of both high luminosity and high redshift. We are conducting a comprehensive follow-up of this sample with XMM, HST, SIRTF and ground-based telescopes. From this sample, we have selected seven candidates with z0.3-0.8 which are among the most luminous objects in the sample. We wish to use XMM both to confirm their AGN character (by detecting an X-ray continuum) and to quantify their degree of obscuration (by measuring the column density of soft X-ray absorption). If these objects are confirmed to be type 2 quasars by these XMM observations, we will have found an important new way to discover substantial numbers of this important class.
