The emerging class of non-thermal shell SNRs is composed by too few unambiguous members to be properly studied. Since this class of objects may play a very important role for a deeper understanding of the Galactic cosmic-ray origin, we propose an XMM large scale program aimed to the detection of yet unknown ojects of this kind and their study. We introduce a selection criterion, based on the radio properties of shell SNRs which are unknown or poorly known in X rays, which results in a list of the 9 most probable non-thermal shell candidates. EPIC spectral analysis of the targets would allow us to distinguish between thermal and non-thermal nature for their emission, shedding light also on the process of electron acceleration in SNRs.
