We request X-ray observations of two late M-early L dwarfs --- LHS 2065 (M9), and Kelu-1 (L2). The picture of activity becomes increasing blurred as one moves past spectral type M8. Several cool objects have been shown to maintain Halpha and transition region fluxes at the level evident in early M dwarfs. There is suggestive evidence that quiescent X-ray emission from M dwarfs as late as M8 can also be maintained at a comparable level. Our deep exposures with XMM-Newton are designed to improve the current upper limits on X-ray and radio quiescent emission for these two active cool objects, and test the hypotheses that (1) similar heating mechanisms are operating in these objects and earlier M dwarfs, and (2) X-rays can be formed in active cool brown dwarfs such as Kelu-1.
