Wr 24, Xmm-Newton Proposal 02033201
Scientific paper
We propose to observe WR24 with XMM-Newton. This star is reputed to be a single Wolf-Rayet (WR) star (spectral type WN6ha). It is the only WR star that exhibits Discrete Absorption Components in its UV spectrum, a feature quite common in O supergiants and thought to be related to wind instabilities. It also belongs to the most luminous class among the WR stars, a class that is supposed to represent the first evolutionary step off the broad main sequence for the most massive O stars. It is therefore the best candidate to isolate the contribution of the line- driven wind instabilities to the X-ray emission of WR stars.
