XMM has revealed several narrow emission lines in the Fe Ka regime for NGC 3516, attributed to relativistically-shifted Fe Ka emission. One compelling interpretation is that these arise in the accretion flow, sporadically illuminated in 'hotspots'. We propose a 116 ks XMM observation of NGC 3516 to: 1) study the variability characteristics of the narrow lines, to distinguish between several models for their origin, 2) determine the X-ray absorber properties at a new epoch and test a model for absorption variations. The high throughput of XMM allows useful constraints to be obtained for the new line features with short exposure time. Thus, the crucial issue of tracking rapid shifts in line energy can be addressed with XMM but not with Chandra.
