We propose a deep (75 ksec) XMM pointing over a field where we are assembling near infrared spectroscopy of a complete sample of EROs. The XMM data, complemented with our optical/infrared imaging and near infrared spectroscopy will allow us: 1. to investigate the global spectral properties of a significant sample of optically near-infrared selected EROs; 2. to evaluate the fraction of AGN amongst EROs and to study the starburst-AGN connection; 3. to give a lower limit on the space density of high-luminosity type 2 AGNs and 4. to shed light on the broad band properties of the X-ray selected EROs at fainter optical near infrared magnitudes. The completeness of our selected EROs sample will allow us to put these studies on firm and solid statistical ground.
