Beta Pictoris is unique in two respects. First, it is the only candidate (proto)planetary system to have been imaged in visible light. Second it is the only star that both exhibits an excess flux in the IRAS passbands and has circumstellar absorbtion features in its spectrum. Many attempts have been made to image IRAS candidate systems. To complement these, we intend to observe a few nearby shell stars to see if a disk like that around Beta Pictoris can be seen. The candidate objects are typically 2x further away than Beta Pictoris, so observations are taken with polarizers and repeated after three months in order to give the best chance of imaging a disk.
