UV spectra of the bright QSO PG 1148+549 (V=15.8, z=0.978) will be obtained to study the far UV emission lines. Low resolution IUE spectra show an emission line at the expected location of Ne VIII 770,780 emission. Ne VIII emission must come from a region of very high ionization and small Lyman continuum optical depth. The presence of Ne VIII emission could indicate a new emission component in the broad emission line region of QSOs beyond the conventional optically thick emission line clouds. These observations will also be used to measure the Ly alpha forest absorption near z = 1.
