Building on our Cycle 4 program, we propose to obtain B and Iimages of a total of about 300 faint field galaxies for whichwe have already secured redshifts in the two deepest and mostextensive ground-based redshift survey programs carried out todate. These galaxies have redshifts in the range 0.1 < z <1.3, with a median = 0.5, corresponding to a look-backtime of close to half the age of the Universe. The images willbe analysed (a) to yield quantitative measurements of thescale lengths and surface brightnesses of disk and bulgecomponents and bulge-to-disk ratios, (b) to identify thelocations of star-formation within the galaxies and to searchfor structures like bars and spiral arms, and (c) to identifycompact companions and other evidence for mergers andinteractions such as tidal tails and distortions. These datawill form the basis for a definitive study of the morphologyof field galaxies at high redshifts and will lead to anunderstanding of the physical processes that have controlledthe evolution of galaxies over the last 2/3 of the age of theUniverse. The data will also allow us to construct astatistically-complete atlas of faint galaxy images which, with our prior knowledge of the redshifts, spectral energydistributions and space densities of the galaxies in question, will enable us to generate empirical quantitative predictionsfor the appearance of the deepest images that are beingobtained with HST.
