Many active galactic nuclei channel energetic particles into jets that feed powerful extended lobes of radio emission; others remain quite compact. Both classes of active galaxies are suspected to be powered gravitationally by the accretion of surrounding material onto a massive black hole. Convincing evidence of this has now been found with HST for the prototype of the jet-producing galaxies, M87, in the form of a bright rapidly rotating nuclear gaseous disk. Here we propose to search for similar mass-measuring disks in compact AGN without jets. We will use the WFPC2 with narrow band filters or the LRF and F547M to make H alpha images of bright Liners with powerful compact flat-spectrum radio sources. Several lines of evidence already suggest that these galaxies may contain rapidly rotating nuclear accretion disks, replenished by gas moving in toward the nucleus: broad emission lines and wings of H alpha emission; 21 cm red-shifted absorption lines; and observations and models of stellar motions which indicate a large central mass. If nuclear disks are found, we will request FOS observations in subsequent cycles to measure their kinematics. In addition to searching for nuclear disks, we will use the H alpha images to study the emission-line regions of these galaxies, in combination with high resolution radio maps, to learn about the evolution and interaction of the hot gas and the relativistic plasma, and to try to determine why these AGN seem unable to produce jets.
