High-resolution VLA images at 8.4 GHz of the hot spots (HSs) of a sample of 13 FR II radio galaxies (RGs) and 13 FRII quasars (QSRs) with a redshift in between 0.3 and 2.0 are presented. The overall morphology and location of the HSs (i.e. whether they are at the outer edges of the radio lobes or embedded within it) are discussed. It has become clear from the availability of these high-resolution radio images that it is not easy to cleanly define hot spots in terms of observed parameters alone. However, these detailed images of the HSs are important in order to understand their properties and their implications for models of radio sources. We will also discuss the compactness of the QSRs and the RGs HSs in light of the unification scheme.
