Dark Matter, Elliptical Galaxies
Scientific paper
Dark massive halos have been discovered in spiral galaxies due to the presence of extended HII and HI disks. In contrast to general lack of gaseous structures in elliptical galaxies has not allowed a detailed study of their mass distribution. Recently the problem of detecting dark massive halos has been attacked using three different approaches. The first one based on the use of the stellar kinematics in order to derive the potential. The second and the third ones make use, as tracer of the potential, of the ionized and HI component respectively of the gaseous disks, which sometimes are found to be present in elliptical galaxies.
