The problem of the origin of periodic comets is considered from various
points of view. It is suggested that the concept of capture in its
classical and modern versions is unable to completely solve the problem
of the origin of periodic comets. Other more efficient sources and
mechanisms also appear to operate in enlarging the system of comets.
