Saturn, Great White Spot Of 1990

Scientific paper

In this report we discuss the BAA's observations of the Great White Spot (GWS) of Saturn, discovered on 1990 September 25 in the Equatorial Zone (EZ). The GWS expanded rapidly in longitude, with bright cloud spreading from it so as to eventually affect the entire EZ. Its motion in longitude is described, and compared with previous EZ spots, which seem to appear every 57 years in the ecliptic longitude range 290-315deg. In view of the importance of the GWS, all positional data available are listed.
