From the detection of several tens of brown dwarfs in young open
clusters (Pleiades, NGC 2516, Blanco 1), we derived new estimates of the
substellar mass function down to 30 Jupiter masses (0.03 solar masses).
Implications for the brown dwarf formation process and for the
universality of the IMF will be discussed.
