The mechanism accounting for the radioactive Al-26 line source along the Galactic plane is explored on the basis of a reanalysis of data from the 1.8-MeV gamma-ray line by the MPI balloon-borne Compton telescope. By applying the maximum entropy method to the data, the 'smoothest' distribution which gives the best fit to the data is identified. The extent of the longitude distribution is 10 deg FWHM. A summary of five other observations of the 1.8-MeV line of Al-26 by HEAO C, SMM, and three different balloon-borne Germanium spectrometers is also given. All six experiments are consistent with a diffuse interstellar origin of the Al-26 line with enhanced emission from the Galactic center region as suggested by various nova and thin hot plasma models in the Galaxy.
