A scenario is developed that permits the assumption of extended inflation in the early universe without introducing scalar fields. Transformations are proposed that can be used to derive Lagrangians that solely involve a nonlinear function of the curvature scalar. The transformations can be used to give the nonlinear function in a form that is similar to the Brans-Dicke model and suitable to the scenario of extended inflation.
