Theories on the nature of the quasar redshift are discussed. The arguments for the redshift being due to the relativistic Doppler effect, the gravitational fields of compact masses, and the expansion of space are summarized. The surface brightness theorem is addressed, and the theoretical importance of observations of quasar galaxies is examined. The evolution of these galaxies is discussed.
